Early December saw Amanda & myself travel to Salisbury. We alighted at the Station as winter rains washed the streets. We were travelling to see an evening with Dr Julia Philips. Her lecture part of the Seed Talks series, this one of Julia's on 'The History & Endurance of Witchcraft'. The venue a Romanesque Temple looking municipal building of Salisbury's guildhall.
Having previously read some of Dr Philips work on modern Witchcraft we knew we were in for a treat. It was great to see a packed house, furnished with a glass of red we took our seats. The guildhalls interior bedecked festively, replete with tinseled tree whilst from above Salisbury's previous dignitaries looked upon proceedings from portraits from the C17th to more modern days.
Julia's lecture began, engaging & enlightening, taking in an historic sweep of witchcraft from the ancients to the early modern, from the Victorian up to the 20th century. Educational, moving and on occasion filled with humour Julia deftly guided one through this fascinating history. From the accused of witchcraft, to those whom identify as Witches & to the mystery religion of Wicca, of which the main protagonists and influencers were looked into.
We really cannot recommend Julia's talk enough! We could delve deeply into each facet of such, but do not wish to spoil it for those who may wish to hear it.
After the lecture we briefly spoke with Julia & of her upcoming work of the persistence of Witchcraft within Victorian England. We also chatted to some of the great people whom had attended the event.
A fabulous evening!!
